ABOUT
MESA
Mathematics, Engineering,
Science Achievement is an academic enrichment program that serves
educationally disadvantaged students. MESA is one of the country’s
oldest and most successful programs that nurtures and unleashes student
performance in math, science and engineering. MESA offers a variety of
curricular and extracurricular services that prepares students to
attend four-year institutions and pursue degrees in math, science,
engineering and computer science.
The MESA Schools Program was established in 1970 at a high school in
Oakland, California and has grown to serve over 350 schools statewide.
The CSU Fullerton MESA Program has been serving students in grades 6-12
for over 20 years and currently serves over 1400 students in six area
high schools and eight intermediate schools.
Program
Services include:
- Academic
Excellence Workshops (AEW) where students
are scheduled in core classes and taught how to maintain high academic
standards through group study.
- Individual Academic Plans
(IAP) in order for MSP counselors to monitor individual student
progress.
- MESA Periods to
provide a regular designated time during the school day for MESA
Advisors (usually math or science teachers) to implement the new MSP
model components.
- MESA Day where
students compete for awards in hands-on math, science and English
activities at local and regional levels.
- Career and College Exploration
through field trips to industry and college sites, opportunities to
hear guest speakers from the industry, etc.
- Parent Leadership
training where parents learn how to become effective advocates for
their children’s academic success.
- Incentive Awards
where students receive cash and non-cash awards for outstanding
academic achievement, participation and leadership.
- Study Skills Training
so students at all levels learn the most effective techniques for
academic achievement.
